An Interlude at Cedar Grove
And mourning with Big Boy.
This week: grapes, eggshells, cherry tomatoes, lemons, avocado, coffee grounds, bell peppers, strawberry tops, banana peels, raspberries.
Going to keep things “lite” this week due to, well you know. Why not chill with an ASMR-adjacent facility tour of Cedar Grove Composting outside Seattle, one of the largest commercial composting concerns in the world? Yeah, it’s nice. Wish I had a big industrial grinder and conveyer belt running out to my yard bins. Maybe someday I’ll get out to Cedar Grove and hurl my body into the delicious mounds of earth.
Mom and Shoney’s Big Boy, John Waters and David Lynch with Bob’s Big Boy.
RIP to director David Lynch, who it’s safe to say completely revamped this young fella’s perspective on my suburban upbringing. Lynch famously loved getting coffee and shakes at Bob’s Big Boy in Los Angeles. My mother Carolynn Mohney passed away in 2019. She also loved Big Boy, though in the South we knew him as Shoney’s Big Boy.
Shoney’s Big Boy was originally a regional franchise of Bob’s Big Boy, though they eventually spun off and dropped the Big Boy from their formal name. But many Shoney’ses throughout the South kept the Big Boy branding and trademark beloved checkered-pants golem out front, even to this day. The Big Boy remains, eternal, under many names or no name, gazing kindly after his admirers as they depart this vale of tears. Take comfort in this constancy when all else is flux.
